Take me to....

The Kiwi Art House

What:  Kiwi Art House is an art gallery dedicated to sharing with you local artists and more!

Where: 288 Cuba Street, Wellington

Why:  A beautiful painting makes a house a home!

At the top of Cuba Street you will find one of the most colourful Art Galleries in town. The walls come to life with beautiful paintings made up of mostly local artists which make it a must see in on any art lovers list

Q & A with Alan Aldridge, proud owner of Kiwi Art House

When did you open the Gallery & why?

I opened it in 2008, when I was made redundant from my previous job. I had a bright idea when I was in Caterton visiting galleries, and I thought 'this looks easy, I could have a gallery too. Art has always been a strong interest of mine, I used to do a lot drawings.

What can we find in your Gallery?

The Emphasis is on Wellington Artists, If you want a painting about Wellington, this is the place to come to. But I also have some artists from around the country, and a collection of other international artists.

What do you look for when selecting something for the Gallery?

Very good question! There are certain things that make a good painting; the composition, vitality, light, but some of them are subconscious. That's what you've got to look for in a painting- Life!

Cool, what are some of the Kiwi Artist you have?

Vincent Ducan who paints in the impressionist style, Diane Taylor, a water colour artist
Phil Dickson, who paints Wellington scenes and water colours

Best thing about owning your own Gallery?

You have a lot of freedom to decide what to do, freedom of action

And finally what do you love about living in Wellington?

It's a physically beautiful city, I can swim after work-  you can walk everywhere!

Than you Alan

Take Me Shopping...

To where?  Zigguart, 144 Cuba Street, Wellington.

What can I find?  A wide range of classic and modern vintage garments, shoes & accessories.

Pour-quoi? Mixing vintage with newer pieces can be really fun & make your outfit stand
out. Quality materials and handmade is frequent.

Q&A with: Kate Byron, the lovely owner of Zigguart.

Do you like Wellington Style?

I love Wellington and the originality-in London people stick closer to trends, while here people dress to what suits them. They will take trends and adapt it to their own style and that's refreshing

What is your advice for creating a great outfit?

Try it on first- you cannot judge if something is right on you just by the coat-hanger. Take a chance, and don't be afraid to ask your shop assistant for help.

What do you wear a lot of?

I don't have a particular era, I like to dress how I feel- it's more of what I'm in the mood for.

How big a part has fashion played in your life?

I grew up with my mum making our clothes, and she and dad were always style conscious. I used to have my own label called Ripe clothing in Wellington

Music & High Tea!

Busking in the City

I had a chat to Lukas Jury, 19 who has been playing music for over 10 years! He moved here 3 years ago from Germany and is also studying at Victoria University

Why do you make music?

It is something I've always loved and lived for. I make more money busking and Wellingtonians appreciate good  music!

What are some of your favourite bands/films?

Bon Iver, Silver Lining, Play books

What is in your opinion a difference of style between England and Wellington?

I don't like English style- in Wellington you can wear what you want- it's okay to dress comfortably. England is not as accepting- it can be quite violent. here it is more relaxed.

Thanks for your time!
